![]() ![]() That is a complete install, with everything you need to run a viable linux desktop operating system. With a lack of space, you will be limited as to what extra programs you can install and how much data you can store, but the standard install of Mint is around 10GB. I install Mint 21 in a virtual machine and I get by with a 22GB drive. Now, if you have limited space on the W7 drive, you can get by with as little as 50GB for Mint 21. I recommend, if the specs I quoted are what you have, that you drop the idea of using an external usb drive for linux, and that you install Mint alongside your Windows 7 on your internal HD. If your hd actually is the stock 500GB-7400rpm drive, that isn't bad at all. It appears you have an intel I5 with intel graphics (probably 3000), and probably 4GB of ram (maybe 2GB). Your 'old' laptop specs aren't all that bad. It can be done, but it really isn't a task for a linux newbie, and, especially on an older laptop, the performance will be sub-par, even if you do succeed. ![]() I'm coming in on this thread late, but, I really don't think that you should be installing on an external drive. ![]() So I tried to continue with instalation and I think about 1 hour and it is still 90%. Had some difficulties with the partitioning - hope that I made it correctly but not sure. Started to install a working version of the linux on 0.5Tb mobile disk. OK, So I got a USB stick, not easyly but somehow managed to install it to load libe linux mint. Or are you wanting to install Linux Mint to the external hard drive? If that is the situation then you will want to get a usb stick or DVD in order to create installation media so you can install Linux Mint on the hard drive. (There are some other methods, but that is the usual way people install Linux Mint.)Īre you wanting to make the entire external hard drive your installation medium? If so, that is rather unusual. You say you downloaded the Linux Mint package and then downloaded Balena, but where did you burn the ISO to an installation medium? You need to create an installation medium, such as usb stick or DVD, in order to install the operating system. The USB is old 1/2 Tb backup hard disk formatted to be empty.I read back through the topic and now I am confused.
